Would it really be worth buying Synology NVMe SSDs at such a high price?

  • Synology has released their new NVMe drives. But are Synology NVMe SSDs (for example SNV5400) worth buying at such a high price?

Do they come with a better controller and better quality?

  • In my opinion, they are not worth it.

Here are my reasons why you should not buy Synology SSD drives:

    • They are slower than 3rd Gen NVMe drives
    • The 1.6TB variant costs over 500 USD at the time of writing this reply
    • There are much better alternatives at much lower prices, such as Japanese Kioxia, European-made Edelware and Goodram products, which you can get at really good prices on DotHardware.com
    • Synology claims that their NVMe drives have high endurance, which could be true, but alternative brands that I mentioned are also known to be very robust with a long lifetime.

That said, if you want to use the latest Synology NAS models, their own NVMe drives are your only option.

I also recommend against Synology NAS devices. In 2025, there are much better options that offer more freedom and flexibility.
